Boxers have such short hair that grooming is fast and easy, but there are a few steps
To keep your Boxers coat glossy and smooth, begin your grooming routine by using a brush to remove excess hair. Since the Boxer’s coat is shorter, you might think you don’t need to brush them as often, but brushing allows a healthy, new coat to grow in. Also, brushing more often will remove debris and the dead coat which will allow you to bathe them less often. An added bonus is that brushing feels like a massage for your dog, and you won’t have to deal with a lot of dog hair in the tub.
The most difficult grooming process can be trimming the nails. However, if you don’t feel comfortable or your dog gets nervous, you can always take your dog to a local groomer to learn proper trimming techniques, or to have them trim the nails for you. Boxer’s nails should be trimmed once a week or before bathing, depending on how short you want to keep their nails. Since Boxer’s should ideally have an arched foot, it’s important to maintain trimming because long nails can cause pain from arthritis, and flattening of the foot.
Once you have brushed and trimmed, you can move onto bathing. It’s very important to note that Boxers have very sensitive skin, and you have to use a shampoo that is soap and detergent free. By using a mild shampoo, their coat will maintain that glossy shine by locking in their essential oils. When bathing, begin by lathering at their head and working your way back to the tail, and always in the direction of their hair growth. Boxers don’t need to be bathed too often since they do have a shorter coat, but every 2 to 3 weeks would work.
Most owners forget about their dogs teeth, but they are an equally important part of grooming. Like humans, plague and tarter buildup can cause damage to your dog’s teeth and gums. If your dog regularly chews on raw bones then you don’t need to brush their teeth as often, since the chewing helps to clean the teeth. For teeth grooming, invest in a toothbrush and toothpaste specific for your dog at any pet supply store.
Boxers are very handsome dogs, and it is your job as their owner to keep them looking clean and healthy. Follow these basic grooming steps every two weeks, and you will have the best looking Boxer.
